# How to connect Zendesk to *Shopify*

A plain, accurate walkthrough. Install the official app, authenticate your store, and get Shopify order data into the Zendesk sidebar in about ten minutes. Then a clear-eyed look at what the integration does, where it stops, and how to decide if it is enough.

## Connect Zendesk to Shopify in about *ten minutes*.

Here is the whole thing in one paragraph. Install the free **Shopify for Zendesk** app from the Zendesk Marketplace, enter your Shopify store domain in Zendesk Admin Center, click Connect to authenticate the store, then turn on the sidebar app for Support and Chat. From that point on, when a customer emails or chats in, their Shopify order history and details appear in a panel next to the ticket, and your agents can process a refund or cancel an unfulfilled order without leaving the conversation.

- **Use the official app.** The connector is **Shopify for Zendesk** on the Zendesk Marketplace, built and maintained by Zendesk. It is free. You can also add it from the Shopify App Store by searching for Zendesk.
- **You need admin access on both sides.** The install touches settings in Zendesk and installs a companion app into your Shopify store, so you need admin rights in both accounts.
- **What you get is context, plus manual actions.** The sidebar shows order history, fulfillment, tracking, and addresses, and lets a human agent issue refunds and cancel unfulfilled orders.
- **What you do not get is autonomous resolution.** A person still reads the ticket and clicks the buttons. The integration surfaces data and an action panel; it does not resolve the ticket for you.
- **Multi-store works.** Connect several Shopify storefronts to one Zendesk account. Each shows up as its own sidebar app.

The rest of this guide walks the setup step by step, then covers exactly what the integration gives you, where it stops, the gotchas that trip teams up, and the honest comparison if your real goal is an AI that resolves Shopify tickets rather than just showing you the data.

## Connect Shopify to Zendesk, *step by step*.

The flow below is the official path using the Shopify for Zendesk app. Do it once per store. Budget about ten minutes if you already have admin access to both accounts.

### 1. Confirm the prerequisites

You need **admin access in both Zendesk and Shopify**, a Shopify or Shopify Plus store, and Zendesk Agent Workspace enabled so the sidebar app has somewhere to render. The official app is free, so the only cost is your existing Zendesk plan. If your Zendesk is on a Support-only plan without the Agent Workspace, enable the workspace first.

### 2. Install the Shopify for Zendesk app

Go to the Zendesk Marketplace, search for `Shopify for Zendesk`, click **Install**, and choose the Zendesk account you want to connect. You can also start from the other direction: in the Shopify App Store, search for Zendesk, install it, and pick the storefront you want to link. Either path lands you in the same place.

### 3. Enter your Shopify store domain

You are redirected to the Shopify integration setup page in **Zendesk Admin Center**. Enter your Shopify store domain, for example `your-store.myshopify.com`, and give the connection a name so you can tell it apart later if you run more than one store.

### 4. Authenticate and connect the store

Click **Connect**. The connect flow installs the Zendesk app into your Shopify store and grants the permissions it needs to read orders and, if you enable it, process refunds and cancellations. When it finishes, you are redirected back to Admin Center. This is the authentication step, so it is where the two systems actually shake hands.

### 5. Configure the sidebar app

Decide where the app appears. In Admin Center, open **Apps and integrations**, then **Integrations**, then **Shopify**. On your storefront connection card, click **Configure**, select **Sidebar app**, and install the Support app for tickets and the Chat app for live conversations. This screen is also where you turn on the ability to **process refunds and cancellations** directly from the sidebar, so switch that on if you want agents to take those actions.

### 6. Test the connection before you rely on it

Create a test ticket using an email address tied to a real Shopify order, then **save the ticket** so the app has a requester to match on. Confirm the Shopify panel populates with the right order. If you enabled refunds, run one small test order end to end so you know the permissions are correct before a real customer is on the line. Optionally, you can also add Zendesk's Web Widget to your Shopify theme for storefront chat and self-service.

**To open the panel in a ticket:** in the Support ticket editor, click **Apps** in the upper right to show the Shopify app in the sidebar. It stays empty until the ticket is saved with a requester whose email or phone matches a Shopify account.

## What the Shopify integration gives your *Zendesk agents*.

Once connected, the integration does two useful things: it surfaces Shopify context inside the ticket, and it gives agents a manual action panel. Here is exactly what each covers.

### Order and customer context in the sidebar

The app matches the ticket requester's email address or phone number to their Shopify account and order, then displays that customer's data next to the conversation. Agents stop tabbing over to the Shopify admin for basic lookups. The panel shows:

- **Order summary and a list of orders by number**, each expandable for detail.
- **Order date and value, customer notes, payment status, and fulfillment status.**
- **Shipment tracking numbers**, so WISMO (where is my order) questions can be answered from the ticket.
- **Billing and shipping addresses** and recent order history.
- **Whether an order can be refunded or cancelled**, shown right on the order.

Because the match works on *email or phone*, a customer who calls or texts can still be identified even when a phone number is the only detail Zendesk holds.

### Manual refunds and cancellations from the ticket

With refunds and cancellations enabled, a human agent can act on the order without opening Shopify:

- **Full or partial refunds** on unfulfilled and fulfilled orders. A full refund selects all line items and shipping and returns items to stock; a partial refund lets the agent choose quantity per line item, restock, and whether to refund shipping.
- **Line-item refunds on unfulfilled orders**, so a customer can cancel part of an order before dispatch without cancelling the whole thing.
- **Cancelling an unfulfilled order** with a reason, reviewed before it is confirmed.
- **Automatic ticket tagging**: a `shopify_refund` tag is added when a refund is actioned, which you can build views and reports on to spot refund-heavy products or customers.

For most support teams that is the real value: the person handling the ticket has the order in front of them and can resolve a straightforward refund or cancellation in a few clicks instead of switching systems.

## What the Zendesk Shopify integration *does not do*.

This is the part most setup guides skip, and it is the part that decides whether the integration actually solves your problem. The honest summary: the integration is a data and action panel for a human. It is not automation.

- **It does not resolve tickets on its own.** Every action, the refund, the cancellation, the tracking answer, is performed by a human agent clicking in the sidebar. The integration puts the order and the buttons in front of a person. It does not read the ticket, decide, and act.
- **Cancellations are limited to unfulfilled orders.** Once an order has been fulfilled, the native cancel action does not apply. You can still refund it, but cancelling a shipped order is not part of the flow.
- **It does not edit orders or subscriptions.** Changing a shipping address, swapping a SKU, editing quantities on a fulfilled order, or pausing and editing a Recharge, Loop, or Skio subscription are not part of the native integration. Those are exactly the actions many ecommerce tickets need, and they land back on a human or a separate tool.
- **Matching is strict.** The customer has to write in from the same email or phone that is on their Shopify account, and the ticket must be saved with a requester first. If they email from a different address, the order will not be found and the panel stays empty.
- **Zendesk's own AI answers, it does not act.** The autonomous AI in Zendesk answers from your help center and deflects common questions. In field reports and buyer interviews, real-world autonomous resolution typically lands near **10 to 20 percent** [3], well below the 50 to 80 percent often marketed. Taking a Shopify action like a refund or a subscription change end to end without a human still requires custom API development on top of the integration.

None of this makes the integration bad. It is a solid context sidebar with a couple of genuine actions attached. The trap is expecting it to *resolve* Shopify tickets. It is built to help a person resolve them faster, not to replace the person.

## Gotchas when you connect Zendesk to *Shopify*.

A few things that are not obvious until you hit them. Sort these before you turn agents loose on the integration.

- **Multiple stores, one Zendesk.** If you run several brands, connect each storefront separately. Each connected store appears as its own sidebar app inside the ticket, with its own settings. That is a real strength, but it also means an agent may see more than one Shopify panel and needs to know which brand a ticket belongs to.
- **Permissions gate the actions.** Refunds and cancellations only work if you enabled them during configuration and the connect flow granted the right scopes. If agents can see orders but the refund button is missing, revisit the sidebar configuration and the Shopify app permissions.
- **Data freshness depends on the match.** The panel reads live Shopify data at the moment the ticket is opened, but only for a customer it can identify. Encourage customers to contact you from the email on their order, and make sure agents save the ticket with the correct requester before expecting the panel to fill.
- **Agent Workspace is required.** The sidebar app renders in the Zendesk Agent Workspace. If a team is on an older interface, the panel will not appear until the workspace is enabled.
- **Free app, paid platform.** The connector costs nothing, but every agent who uses it is a paid Zendesk seat, and heavier needs may push you toward paid third-party Marketplace apps. Budget the Zendesk plan, not the integration.
- **Test refunds on a real, small order.** A test ticket confirms data sync, but only a real low-value order confirms the refund and cancellation permissions end to end. Do that once before go-live.

## If you want AI that resolves and acts on *Shopify*.

Everything above is the right answer if your goal is to give human agents Shopify context and a manual refund button inside Zendesk. Set it up, and you are done. This section is for a different goal: resolving Shopify tickets without a person clicking each one. Since that is what we build, treat this as a labeled comparison, not a neutral one.

The gap is simple. The Zendesk Shopify integration **shows** the order and lets a human **act** on it. It does not read the WISMO email, pull the tracking, and reply on its own. A person still does that, ticket after ticket. For a team drowning in repeat questions, the sidebar makes each one a little faster, but the volume still lands on people.

**Richpanel is a different model.** It is a team of AI agents that runs customer service end to end, alongside the helpdesk your people work in, on one bill. Connected to Shopify, the AI reads the ticket, pulls the order, and takes the action itself: order tracking, refunds, cancellations, and subscription changes, resolving 50 percent of conversations autonomously at maturity. Your people handle the exceptions with an AI copilot. The AI is metered per conversation at about **$0.20 each** because you choose the model and token budget, and a 50 percent resolution in 30 days money-back guarantee makes the ramp a probation period rather than a leap of faith.

The honest limits, since this section would be useless without them: Richpanel is a full switch off Zendesk, not a sidebar you bolt onto it. It has no native voice and integrates with Aircall, Dialpad, and JustCall rather than hosting phone itself, and its ecosystem is smaller than Zendesk's. If your Zendesk works and you only wanted order context in the sidebar, the free integration above is the right tool and you should stop there. If your real problem is that a human still resolves every Shopify ticket by hand, that is a different product, and it is worth pricing on your own tickets. ## Connecting Zendesk and Shopify: common questions.

### Is there an official Zendesk Shopify app?

Yes. The official connector is **Shopify for Zendesk**, listed on the Zendesk Marketplace and maintained by Zendesk. It is free to install and can also be added from the Shopify App Store by searching for Zendesk. Once configured, it adds a Shopify panel to the agent sidebar in Zendesk Support tickets and in Chat, showing order history, fulfillment status, tracking, and addresses, and it lets a human agent process refunds and cancel unfulfilled orders. Paid third-party apps such as Shopify by Zenplates and Shopify Premium for Zendesk also exist on the Marketplace for teams that need more.

### Can Zendesk issue Shopify refunds automatically?

Not automatically in the sense of an AI resolving the ticket on its own. The Shopify for Zendesk sidebar lets a human agent issue full or partial refunds and cancel unfulfilled Shopify orders manually, with restock and refund-shipping options, and it auto-tags the ticket when a refund or cancellation is actioned. But a person still reads the ticket, opens the sidebar, and clicks. Zendesk's own autonomous AI answers from your help center and deflects common questions, and taking the refund action end to end without a human still requires custom API development.

### Does the integration support multiple Shopify stores?

Yes. You can connect several Shopify storefronts to a single Zendesk account. Each connected store appears as its own sidebar app inside the ticket, with settings you can configure per storefront, which is useful if you run more than one brand out of one Zendesk instance.

### Is the Zendesk Shopify integration free?

The official Shopify for Zendesk app is free to install. You are only paying for your underlying Zendesk plan, which is billed per agent per month, plus any add-ons and the AI resolution meter. Some third-party Marketplace apps that extend the integration are paid. The connector itself does not add a line item.

### What Shopify data shows up in Zendesk after you connect them?

The sidebar app matches the ticket requester's email or phone to their Shopify account and shows order summary information, a list of orders by number, and per-order details: order date and value, customer notes, payment status, fulfillment status, tracking numbers, and billing and shipping addresses. It also indicates whether an order can be refunded or cancelled. The ticket must be saved with a requester first, and if the customer contacts you from a different email than they ordered with, the order will not be found.

### What if I want the AI to resolve Shopify tickets, not just show the data?

That is a different job than the native integration does. The Zendesk Shopify integration gives human agents context and a manual action panel. If you want an AI that reads the ticket and takes the Shopify action end to end, that is an AI-native platform rather than a sidebar app. See our [Zendesk review](https://www.richpanel.com/learn/zendesk-review) for where the platform fits, or [compare Zendesk with Richpanel](https://www.richpanel.com/compare/zendesk) directly.

## Where these steps come from.

The setup steps and capabilities are drawn from Zendesk's and Shopify's own integration documentation, verified as of July 2026. Vendors change features and pricing, so confirm the live behavior in your own account before you rely on it.
